Daily diet soda tied to higher heart attack risk – Health – Diet and nutrition – msnbc.com

Just as you were starting to feel virtuous for having switched from sugary sodas to low- or no-calorie substitutes, a new study comes along suggesting that diet sodas might be bad for your head and your heart.

Ah yes, in our modern society you can find a study to pretty much back up whatever you want. It’s pretty convenient. Want more salt? Less salt? An excuse to drink wine every day? Or maybe you want to quote a study at someone to make them feel about drinking wine every day. Well just Google it. Someone has done a study to support it. No matter if you are grounded in common sense or completely off your rocker.

This study was a good example. All the people were of “advanced” age. All at risk already for heart attack and other risks. Another big issue is that it was not peer-reviewed. For any study to be considered true and reliable that is must. But when people want to ignore it they do so that no one tells them how wrong they are. Third is what else did they do? It only tracked the soda. Did they say well I’m having diet soda load me up on butter? A lot of people do that. They somehow think that lowering the sugar content of their drinks gives them carte blanche to eat anything and more of it. Even healthy foods must be consumed carefully. A huge salad is still huge even if it is a salad.

Of course the scare media or national media as you may know them picked this story up and ran with it. It was on local news and splashed on web pages. The story I found talking about the negatives as pretty buried and sure didn’t make local outlets. When will media learn that yes they must report the bad things in our world. It is a pretty messed up place, but we don’t have to focus on it. Focus on positive things, things that also lift people up and further us as a social group. I doubt they ever will, but we can ourselves. You can do it on-line, you can do it in real life. Just Do it as Nike said for so long.

Got that mountain bike ride in despite the cold!

My new mountain bike tire after my ride.

What a great day. It started off with snow this morning and looked cold. My wife went to the gym and reported to me that it was cold and windy. However after the last time where I let myself get lazy and missed out on a really nice ride I stuck to my guns today. When 11:30 rolled around I got my new cold weather gear on. I just got a Terramar half-zip winter shirt, Terramar winter pants and some Mountain Hardwear stretch gloves from http://www.sunnysports.com. I’ll be reviewing those in my next blog.

I knew if I shut off my computer, loaded up the bike and just got out I would have a great time. I sure did. It was cold, chilly really, not cold. It was snowy, icy, muddy, in other words IT WAS GREAT. I only started doing real mountain bike riding this summer and we have had a slow easy winter down off the mountains in Colorado so this was my most “wintry” ride yet. I’ve ridden in some slush, some snow and some mud but this was the biggest mix of all 3 yet.

A little info for you I don’t have a new bike. I have my old steel 98′ GT Outpost. It is a hard frame without even front suspension. I have slip-ins on my peddles, a decent seat, a rear rack for a functional fender and those handle things on the ends of my bar. It’s a great bike. It does not look like much but it rides well. Really well. I bought it new in 98′ and all I have done is one tune-up and changed the tires and the seat. Everything else is original parts. That is how well it has held up and I really give great props to GT for making such a sturdy bike.

That being said I have ridden a newer Trek. It was full suspension and weights about 1/4 of what my GT weighs. It is amazing to ride. So fast, so quick, so smooth. It is my friends bike and when I rode it the one time it was like being Superman. I could just go faster and faster and faster. I was riding on a trail with rocks, drops and big tree roots but it was like riding down the street. So much fun. The downside? It cost him $2300 dollars and that was marked down from $2900. Now sure it is worth it. I really do think it is worth it but it is only worth it if you can actually afford to drop 2k on a bike. I can not.

Getting out and riding today was a huge accomplishment for me. My first real winter ride in adverse weather conditions, in adverse riding conditions and required that I force myself to do it. But like always once I got going it was so much fun. I always feel that way. Even if I don’t want to once I start I love it. And what  a great day I have had today. I did strength training this morning, went on a bike ride, and walked the dogs with my wife. Now I’m settling in to watch the UFC prelims for UFC 126.

Exhaustion really is good for my soul.

P.S. Of course I used the Cardiotrainer app from http://www.worksmartlabs.com like always. Still hoping they will give me a bluetooth heart monitor to review. 🙂

Staying motivated, not easy when it’s cold.

A cyclist with a mountain bike gets a workout ...

Today I let myself down. I was wanting to go on a winter mountain bike ride on my GT in the middle of the day when it was at its warmest. I recently bought some medium duty cold weather gear from http://www.sunnysports.com and have been itching to try it out. Now you do have to understand that it has been super cold here in Colorado for the last four days. But I was all set. The forecast called for it to be 37 degrees. I ran an errand in my car and saw people commuting to work or to CSU which all got me excited to go. Than I got home and the chill set in and I wimped out. When I looked up the temp it said it was only 22 degrees out. But I should have gone outside. Later when I did go outside it didn’t even feel very cold. I was really bummed and disappointed in myself.

But I’ve learned from it, and I plan to remember this little episode and grow from it. As long as I do that and in the future don’t miss chances like today than I can live with it.

Staying motivated, pushing one’s self, that is what it is all about!

Android App Review: Calorie Counter by Fatsecret

Retro Video Game Cupcake Tower

Calorie counters. There are a lot out there. I guess I got lucky. Because my first installed app is one I love. Since than I have tried a few others for giggles but none compare. I really had to weigh all the apps on my phone and really decide what one to do my second review on. I picked this one because it works great, links up online which always means easier management and it has many cool features.

What do I like the most? It’s database. It is huge. From general items to specific items you can search for them or you can use the bar code scanner. If by chance you can’t  find what you are looking for or you don’t agree with the nutritional information that it comes up with you can even make your own entry to the database. This means that if you have  a favorite family dish that you like to make you can add it in. For those of us cooking at home, watching our calories and intake and taking the time to prepare it yourself this in an invaluable tool.

I have tried other counter apps and they tend to be too complicated or too simple. Another thing that makes this so great is the fact that it is really easy to adjust the portion size to how much you ate. From recommended portion sizes to custom amounts by ounce.

Yet another great feature is the fact that if you want you can track your exercise along with it see how that matches up with your calorie intake. This is very useful in having a good picture of how you are doing overall.

In the end I would highly recommend this app. It is free, works great and has no real draw backs. Hard to beat that.

CardioTrainer by WorkSmart Labs Inc

cardio trainer
First off let’s line out the basics.
What do we all want to know?
Cost-basic is free, with the ability to upgrade to a full trainer mode as well as a race mode
Add-ons-Move your bot game, and Race yourself and a calorie tracker.
Facebook compatible Yes, status posts and profile box
Twitter compatible-Yep, that too.

What does it do? Well it basically tracks your workouts. It uses both GPS and a pedometer so for those of you always running down your battery you can save it if you need to. It also calculates your calorie burn and lets you enter your weight to keep it accurate. The map feature is really great. I really enjoy being able to see where I have gone and share it with others.

Another good feature is music integration. It will start automatically if you choose or you can turn it on when you start the workout.

It also connects with google health as well as Facebook and twitter so no matter what social network you like it will do it. Unless you still use myspace but then if you do you probably don’t have a smart phone either. Cause that is so 2000.

They are constantly updating the app and making it work better. That is always a plus. They recently updated it to work with a blue tooth heart monitor. This is really neat. I don’t have the money to buy the monitor, and so will have to stick with using the one I have that feeds to my watch but that is a great feature.

I don’t use the add-ons. For counting calories their system is to basic and I don’t care for it. I use Calorie Counter instead. And the other add-ons are more to kinda take up time and I don’t have enough of that as it is.

Overall I would rate this app 4/5 droids. If the calorie counter was as good as the one I use it would be 5 for sure.

President Obama’s Healthcare Speech. (Before)

Tonight I plan on watch President Obama’s speech on health-care. Now those of you who know me can properly guess that I did not vote for him. I voted for McCain but don’t really care for him either. I just found him to be the lesser of three evils. I have some thoughts on the whole third party idea that I plan on sharing later this week in a blog as well a quoting an amazing section from the book “days of war nights of love” to you all.

But now back on topic, I am curious to hear what he has to say. I will not be watching it live because my kids to stuff at church to do and I will be taking them so I plan on watching it, writing the after part of this blog and than maybe I will look up some sites and see what people say. I tend to stay away from the big sites or shows because conservative ones tend to be over board with their harsh talk and liberal show are of course the opposite. Anything he says is considered perfect and wonderful. That too is another blog topic that is coming. Why is it that because Obama is a black man he is a God? First black president, yes that is historical, but however that fact alone does not make him a good president. Only time will show that.

But I’m curious if any of you out there plan on watching, or do you plan on not watching on purpose or do you just not really care either way.
