Got that mountain bike ride in despite the cold!

My new mountain bike tire after my ride.

What a great day. It started off with snow this morning and looked cold. My wife went to the gym and reported to me that it was cold and windy. However after the last time where I let myself get lazy and missed out on a really nice ride I stuck to my guns today. When 11:30 rolled around I got my new cold weather gear on. I just got a Terramar half-zip winter shirt, Terramar winter pants and some Mountain Hardwear stretch gloves from http://www.sunnysports.com. I’ll be reviewing those in my next blog.

I knew if I shut off my computer, loaded up the bike and just got out I would have a great time. I sure did. It was cold, chilly really, not cold. It was snowy, icy, muddy, in other words IT WAS GREAT. I only started doing real mountain bike riding this summer and we have had a slow easy winter down off the mountains in Colorado so this was my most “wintry” ride yet. I’ve ridden in some slush, some snow and some mud but this was the biggest mix of all 3 yet.

A little info for you I don’t have a new bike. I have my old steel 98′ GT Outpost. It is a hard frame without even front suspension. I have slip-ins on my peddles, a decent seat, a rear rack for a functional fender and those handle things on the ends of my bar. It’s a great bike. It does not look like much but it rides well. Really well. I bought it new in 98′ and all I have done is one tune-up and changed the tires and the seat. Everything else is original parts. That is how well it has held up and I really give great props to GT for making such a sturdy bike.

That being said I have ridden a newer Trek. It was full suspension and weights about 1/4 of what my GT weighs. It is amazing to ride. So fast, so quick, so smooth. It is my friends bike and when I rode it the one time it was like being Superman. I could just go faster and faster and faster. I was riding on a trail with rocks, drops and big tree roots but it was like riding down the street. So much fun. The downside? It cost him $2300 dollars and that was marked down from $2900. Now sure it is worth it. I really do think it is worth it but it is only worth it if you can actually afford to drop 2k on a bike. I can not.

Getting out and riding today was a huge accomplishment for me. My first real winter ride in adverse weather conditions, in adverse riding conditions and required that I force myself to do it. But like always once I got going it was so much fun. I always feel that way. Even if I don’t want to once I start I love it. And what  a great day I have had today. I did strength training this morning, went on a bike ride, and walked the dogs with my wife. Now I’m settling in to watch the UFC prelims for UFC 126.

Exhaustion really is good for my soul.

P.S. Of course I used the Cardiotrainer app from http://www.worksmartlabs.com like always. Still hoping they will give me a bluetooth heart monitor to review. đŸ™‚

Massive explosion hits natural gas terminal in Egypt-Is it militants or the government?

explosion

There was an explosion on a major gas pipeline in Egypt today. I see this as one of two things.

1st. It could certainly be militants taking advantage of the army’s distraction to attack a hated pipeline to Israel. Since the peace accord the supply of gas to Israel has always been an issue of contention. That is certainly plausible.

2nd. This one pushing the boundaries but it is also quite possible. It is not impossible to believe that the government did this themselves. By taking attention away from the protesters and having unrest they can blame on them it gives them an excuse to put it down. It gives them an excuse to roll in and stomp down with their steel toed boot. Safely from inside of a tank of course.

We may never really know what happened. In fact the governments own stories do not match up, but what matters is that the protestors never give up, never surrender. Keep doing what you are doing. If they can keep at it, not get discouraged or sent home they can accomplish something amazing. History is happening now in Egypt and it is so exciting.
